Demetrius Philp, Artist
San Francisco, CA
We partnered with photographer Demetrius Philp to decolonize access to conservation and collaborated on restorative preservation for various art pieces.
HOW WE DONATED OUR TIME AND EXPERTISE:
CONNECTION
We funded an opportunity for cultural exchange where Demetrius shared his art and practice with the stained glass team at Nzilani Glass. His work includes portraiture made in the tradition of 19th century photography that incorporates silver nitrate on metal and glass surfaces. While originally made to represent wealthy people, Philp’s portraits represent folks from culturally rich communities who are overlooked in the 21st century.
CONSERVATION
We shared that true “stained glass” is flat glass that has been stained with silver nitrate on the surface. Through storytelling and treatment approaches, we shared similar experiences to using the medium and how to conserve it.
